My Life in Ten Seconds: Designers John Targon and Scott Studenberg of Baja East

My Life in 10 Seconds: John Targon and Scott Studenberg Meet Scott Studenberg and John Targon, the charismatic boys behind the next It label Baja East. The lifestyle brand embodies a cool global aesthetic that bridges inspiration from the Far East with the laid back ease from the West Coast and New York s street sensibility (Gwen Stefani counts herself as a fan). And with New York Fashion Week fall/winter 2015 shows rapidly approaching, we got up close and personal with both designers, and had them answer a quick survey of questions that delve into their new collection (no spoilers, promise) and their personal lives—that takes all of 10 seconds to read.

Scott: Oasis.
John: Sun-bleached.
What are you listening to right now?
Scott: 90s angst, like Collective Soul, Matchbox 20, Alanis Morissette, Foo Fighters, The Cranberries, Cheryl Crow.

John: The Rothko exhibit.
The last drink I had was
Scott: I Am Cozy from Cafe Gratitude in LA
John: Killer X from Liquiteria
What job would you be doing if you weren t a fashion designer?
Scott: A yoga instructor on a deserted island in Thailand.
John: Tae Kwon Do instructor.
Where would you go first in NYC if you were a tourist?
Scott: Sex and the City bus tour.
John: West Village.
What is your favorite work of art?

Who did you design your first piece for?
Scott: For us. We had these handwoven one-of-a-kind ceremonial skirts we sourced from Bali that we constructed into sleeveless Bajas.

My Life in Ten Seconds: John Targon and Scott Studenberg Scott: (Created with actual receipts) Show me the receipts.  — Whitney Houston

Kate Moss Is Giving Your iPhone and iPad a High-Fashion Touch

Kate Moss Kate Moss is about to give your cell phone a makeover! The model, who previously created a line of clothes for Topshop, is taking her fashion expertise to the tech side by designing mobile phone and tablet accessories with Carphone Warehouse.  My phone s as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes, and yet there s so little choice out there, Moss said in a statement. My whole approach was to treat this as any other fashion collaboration; I was heavily involved in the design process and loved seeing my vision come to life in the final product. If the model s personal style is any indicator, we re expecting to see iPhone and iPad cases in sleek color combinations with an ultra-luxe touch. Keep an eye out for The Kate Moss Accessories Collection, which launches on carphonewarehouse.com later this summer.

As part of StyleMint’s Studio Series, the stylish sisters will launch AMKxSM—a must-have capsule that blend s the Olsen s modern design aesthetic with StyleMint s versatile, everyday style. We drew inspiration from constellations and created versatile pieces that transition easily from day to night, Ashley tells InStyle of the collection, which features scattered gems and a night sky palette that gives an elegant nod to horoscopic traditions. Mary-Kate adds: We focused on minimalist designs that can be mixed, matched, and layered, yet are strong enough to wear on their own.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen AMKxSM StyleMint Collection How should you wear the earrings, hand chains, necklaces, rings, and more that they designed? Take a cue from the fashionable pair. If you have multiple earring holes, wear a pair of the Pyxis drop earrings in the same ear for an asymmetrical look, says Mary-Kate. I love the idea of layering structured pieces with the more delicate ones. Pair the Hydra bangle with the Lynx hand chain, Ashley states.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen AMKxSM StyleMint Collection When it came to the creation of the bags, the Olsen s had a specific vision. We always design with functionality in mind, Ashley says. Each pouch can be carried as a clutch or used to hold everyday items, including makeup and jewelry.
Look for AMKxSM ($29.99 to $39.99) when it launches on Nov. 1 exclusively at StyleMint.com.

The Big Reason Why Orlando Bloom Is Celebrating Today

orlando bloom birthday Orlando Bloom turns 38 today! Yep, we can t believe it either. It seems like just yesterday that we spotted the now Broadway veteran, InStyle Man of Style, and father to 4-year-old son Flynn (with model Miranda Kerr), acting alongside Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen in the super-successful Lord of the Rings franchise when the English actor was merely a fresh-faced 21-year-old.
PHOTOS: What We Know About Orlando Bloom, According to His Co-Stars
With over a decade of experience under his belt, it s refreshing to see that the star still stays true to himself. He doesn t take himself seriously, Evangeline Lilly, his The Hobbit co-star, tells us. There are a few things worse than working with an actor who does. Orlando is always up for having a laugh. Cheers, Orlando!

InStyle s Eric Wilson: 2014 Globes Red Carpet One of the Most Gratifyingly Daring

golden-globes-best-dressed Does it pay to take chances?
That question comes to mind in the hazy morning-after replay of Sunday night’s Golden Globes ceremony, one of the most gratifyingly daring in recent memory when it came to the gowns on display. We’ve all been starved for signs of fashion independence among Hollywood stars, but who can blame them for conforming when the critics’ knives are so sharp?
So those who broke the rules this year deserve extra applause for doing so, especially for choices that would inevitably lead to a few slings and arrows, and here I’m talking about the Dolce & Gabbana shirt/gown hybrid worn by Julia Roberts or Jennifer Lawrence’s white Dior gown with black bands. Both were dresses I happened to like a lot Julia’s because she looked comfortable and classy; Jennifer’s because her relationship with Dior is creating one of the most fascinating collaborations between a designer and actor in red carpet history. Yet the banded gown was so unconventional it inspired parodies overnight, with people dressing their cats and dogs in white bed sheets.
Raf Simons, the Dior designer, does not design with the red carpet foremost in mind, but he recognizes the need for women to feel beautiful and comfortable in their clothes, and that the actors he dresses represent a new sensibility of dressing for the world to see. Lawrence was that. And surely, with her sense of humor, she appreciates a good dress joke.
In most cases, the answer to the night’s question about taking chances was a resounding yes, which is promising news for what we might expect to see at the Oscars as well. There were interesting shapes and trends, notably the covered shoulders on many dresses (Bérénice Béjo in Giambattista Valli, Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé) and the undisputed color choice of the night, a brilliant red that reminded us of the importance of the carpet underneath everyone’s feet (soiled though it might have been this year by that unfortunate sewage break).
The Golden Globes are becoming ever more important for designers, so there was a sense of their staking territory among the newly minted style stars. I’m thinking of Emma Watson in a backless red dress with smart black pants underneath (also Dior), and Emilia Clarke, in her silvery textural strapless gown from Proenza Schouler, one of the highlights of the night.
Lupita Nyong’o, who has quickly become a fashion favorite during the smaller lead-up events, took her place on the world stage in a red silk cady Ralph Lauren gown that, with its floor-sweeping cape, was anything but a safe choice. And that moment will be remembered as one of the greatest Globes debuts of all time.

#RocksMyWorld: Jackie Kennedy s Jewels (You Can Buy Them—Honest!)

Jackie Kennedy In this weekly feature, InStyle’s jewelry and watch editor Marion Fasel shares the inside scoop on the treasures that are on her radar. Look for it every Thursday on What’s Right Now, and follow Fasel on Instagram (@marionfasel) to see more gems that rock her world.
Jackie Kennedy’s birthday on Monday and the countdown to InStyle’s 20th anniversary issue that will hit newsstands in a couple of weeks, made me think of the first article I ever contributed to the magazine 18 years ago. “Jackie’s Jewels” was conceived by my co-author Penny Proddow and me, shortly after Sotheby’s in New York City auctioned the majority of her estate in 1996.
Dubbed the sale of the century by the press, there was a buying frenzy over everything, but particularly Jackie’s jewelry. During a two-day period when just the jewelry was on the auction block her collection shattered record prices. A triple-strand necklace of costume pearls frequently worn by Jackie when she was First Lady had an estimated sale price of $500 to $700. It sold for a mind-boggling $190,000. The Harry Winston ring Jackie’s second husband Aristotle Onassis gave her as an engagement present featuring a 40.42-carat marquise-shaped diamond, named the Lesotho III, went for almost four times the estimate of $600,000 and sold for more than $2,350,000.
With all the hype surrounding the high sale prices few people realized that Jackie’s most prized pieces, mainly the gifts she received from President Kennedy were not sold at the auction. They were kept in the family and one piece was donated to The John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. When our InStyle story was published in 1996 the tag line on the cover said “Jackie’s Jewels (You can buy them—honest!).” It showed versions of the designs that were still made by a few of Jackie’s favorite jewelers, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany, and Cartier. Eighteen years later, it is still possible to buy Jackie’s jewels—honest! Take a look at her iconic treasures that have more than withstood the test of time.
Van Cleef & Arpels Haricot Clip (top): During her 1961 state visit to Paris for the dinner at Versailles, the First Lady wore her pair of Van Cleef & Arpels Haricot clips in her hair with a Givenchy gown. She also put on her diamond earrings and carried a gold and diamond minaudière both from Van Cleef & Arpels. Originally designed in the 1930s, the clips can still be found upon occasion in the legendary French jewelers inventory. $52,500 each; vancleefarpels.com or 877-VAN-CLEEF.
Jackie Kennedy Cartier Tank Watch: President Kennedy gave Jackie a Cartier Tank watch in 1963 inscribed on the back “To Jackie, Love Jack.” She wore it when she was dressed in her sportier clothes on the ski slopes, horseback riding, or sailing. Since the watch was conceived by Louis Cartier in 1917 the French firm continuously made a version of the original style. $4,900 cartier.com.
Jackie Kennedy Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany Two Fruit Clip: To celebrate the birth of their son, John Kennedy Jr. on Nov. 25, 1960, JFK gave Jackie the Two Fruit Clip. The brooch is part of the permanent collection at The Kennedy Library in Boston and it s among one of the first pieces Jean Schlumberger created for Tiffany. The American jeweler no longer makes a version in rubies, but they do the style set with other gems. Ruby Two Fruit Clips upon occasion appear at estate auctions or vintage jewelers. One sold for $16,250 at Christie’s in New York on April 16, 2013.
Jackie Kennedy Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany Croisillons Bracelets: Jackie Kennedy acquired her first Croisillons bracelet in 1962 while she was First Lady. Over the years she added several different renditions of the design in various colors to her collection. She wore them causally during the 60s when she visited Capri or during the summertime in New York. They became one of her signature spieces, second only perhaps to her large sunglasses, that the fashion press nicknamed the jewels “The Jackie Bracelets.” Tiffany has made the jewels since Jean Schlumberger designed them around 1962. The oversized gold bangles feature colorful enamels studded with gems. Prices for the Croisillons bracelets begin around $30,000 and are available at tiffanys.com.
Jackie Kennedy The Antique Diamond Starburst Brooch: In 1962, President Kennedy bought Jackie a diamond Starburst brooch set in silver and gold from the British Crown jeweler Wartski in London. For events at the White House, Jackie pinned the piece to her Oleg Cassini gowns and clipped it into her elaborate updos created by the celebrated stylist of the era Kenneth. A popular nineteenth century motif, the diamond starbust brooch was created by many different jewelers during the era. Today versions can be found at fine vintage jewelers like Kentshire in New York. Price upon request, kentshire.com.

Hopscotch, Power Wheels, and Purse-Shaped Cakes: Stella McCartney s Fun Fall 2014 Presentation

Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney If there is one designer who knows how to put the fun in presenting a collection, it s Stella McCartney. Last night, the designer hosted an intimate launch to showcase her fall 2014 collection at the Harold Pratt House & Peterson Hall in New York City, complete with hopscotch and miniature Escalade power wheels. Close friends—including Liv Tyler, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin—also stopped by to join the fun.
As guests indulged in small bites, cakes in the shapes of Stella s signature handbags, Beluga Vodka cocktails, and flutes of Veuve Clicquot champagne, models sported pieces from Stella s new line including houndstooth and polka dot-printed pieces, along with designs featuring English artist Gary Hume s graphic drawings, and masculine-inspired footwear (all sustainable of course). As much as we love the new collection, we can t help but wonder which of McCartney s friends did a round of hopscotch. As Seen on the Better Show: The Perfect Holiday Attire for Any Occassion

Better Show Have a lot of holiday parties on your social calendar but don t know what to wear? InStyle s Senior Market Editor and Digital Correspondent Dana Avidan-Cohn has figured it all out for you. Today, she stopped by Hallmark Channel s Better Show to help pick the best polished holiday looks for every kind of party, whether it s a casual get-together or a fancy New Year s Eve bash.
According to Avidan-Cohn, the play of textures plus anything that shouts glitz and glamor  are big this year, so key pieces you should look for include status jackets, fur stoles, feather-hemmed dresses, and shiny blouses. Scroll down to get more of Avidan-Cohn s top tips on how to dress for your holiday parties and we promise, you ll be sure to ring in 2014 (or the end of this year!) in style.

For Elegant Events
It s all about the play of textures and touches of sparkle, from the bag and shoes to accessories, Avidan-Cohn says. A status jacket and a plush top adds interest and warmth, but you can also add a DIY effect by wearing a faux fur stole over a fitted boucle jacket, which instantly amps up the luxe factor.  Avidan-Cohn also advises that a full skirt is perfect for any elegant holiday party. It s very right now and it has a retro shape and length that feels very ladylike, she explains.
For Casual Get-Togethers
For a holiday party that isn t fancy, Avidan-Cohn suggests adding a little shine to your look to make it festive. Mixing a shiny top, like Juicy Couture s gold lame tuxedo blouse, with a pair of distressed jeans can perfectly transition the look from casual to chic. Mixing a classic coat, pointy-toe pumps, and a sparkly gem-stone clutch to your look also marries uptown polish with downtown attitude, says Avidan-Cohn.
For Ringing In the New Year
New Year s Eve is an evening where it’s definitely okay to layer on the glitz, Avidan-Cohn says. This BCBG Max Azria feather-hem dress is the ultimate New Year’s Eve look it’s swingy and feathery! You can add a gold clutch, luxe red velvet pumps, and a bracelet on the arm to round out the look. Avidan-Cohn also suggests throwing on a white tuxedo blazer to help keep you warm. Black and white are a great graphic color pairing, she points out, plus you can remove it once the party gets heated!
A Party With No Dress-Code
If you have no idea what the dress code is, Avidan-Cohn s trick is to go high-low. She suggests going big with your shoes and a statement necklace, but keeping the rest of your outfit simple.  Also, anything jewel-toned, embellished with feather accents, shine, or faux fur is a go-to in Avidan-Cohn s book.

Jason Bateman s New Comedy Bad Words Will Take You Back to Elementary School

Jason Bateman, Rohan Chand, and Kathryn Hahn Once you leave grade school, you ve probably never thought about competing in a spelling bee again in your life. Not so for 40-year-old Guy Trilby. The angry-at-the-world character is portrayed by Jason Bateman in the star s directorial debut Bad Words, now playing in select theaters. In the film, he finds a loophole in the National Quill Spelling Bee contest rules and contends for the number one spot, competing against a group of fun and obnoxious little squirts, including one who he befriends, Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand, who you may remember as Abu Nazir s lost child from Homeland season one). Kathryn Hahn plays the fiery reporter trailing the case. I ve worshipped Jason since forever, Hahn told InStyle when we sat down with the cast at the Toronto International Film Festival. The fact that he took a chance on me to be his unromantic leading lady was very exciting. The following is an excerpt from our conversation.
What was your proudest moment on set?
Jason Bateman: Probably the last day, just finishing. It was a huge amount of responsibility directing. I felt very, very lucky to be given all that responsibility. To be able to finish it and on time, felt great.
Kathryn Hahn: Oh, probably getting through those sex scenes without laughing.
What is going to surprise viewers about this film when they watch it?
JB: That it’s a little bit darker and moodier than you would think a comedy would be. That’s the kind of films I really like and I was really happy that we managed to accomplish that.
KH: The fact that I have the most vile mouth on the planet. And I wear glasses! My character has a very specific aesthetic. She likes tweed and Dr. Scholl s shoes. She feels like Ali McGraw, but with nerdy glasses. I love her whole look.
Were there any embarrassing moments on set or funny anecdotes that you remember?
KH: The sex scene in the closet, pretty fantastic.
Bad Words, rated R, is in select theaters starting March 14.

Lauren Conrad Cuts Her Hair into a Lob (as We Collectively Swoon)!

While we admittedly think Lauren Conrad can do no wrong (see her super chic apartment and dreamy wedding ceremony) she still manages to surprise us with her great style on a regular basis. Just last night, on Instagram, Conrad debuted a new crop—a fresh, layered lob—which she described as her  first haircut in years. Kristin Ess, L.C. s longtime hairstylist and co-founder of The Beauty Department, provided the newlywed with the new look.
RELATED: Lauren Conrad and William Tell Make Their Post-Wedding Debut at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic
Last year, Conrad told InStyle, I like the lob a lot, but my hair grows so slowly so I’m reluctant to cut it any shorter. I do think it’s a really cool look, I’ve been toying around with the idea. It’s hair, and it does always grow back, so I think it’s fun to experiment with new looks. Her hair color is still the warm, buttery blonde she s had recently, but we re betting she ll change it up soon enough—after all, Conrad was one of the first in the now long list of celebrities to go lavender, have hot pink tips, and even try rainbow highlights.

What s Right Meow: You ve Never Seen a Feline Jewelry Model as Precious as This

Set your sights on just about the most precious thing ever: Kiki, the kitten seen on Colette Jewelry’s Instagram, modeling alongside some of the brand’s finest new gems. Owned by French-Mexican designer Colette Steckel, the gray British shorthair is a new addition to the family—and already has a thing for diamonds.
Colette Jewelry is known for intricate stone-studded pieces including star-motif ear cuffs, flower pendants, and heart-arrow rings loved by celebs Katy Perry and Rihanna. Most of the pieces are made from Steckel’s workshop in Los Angeles, though she does work in Paris and Mexico City as well. Always mindful of fresh inspirations, Steckel produces collections that are constantly evolving; her upcoming pieces are shown off in Kiki s most recent photos.

Here, we find an up-close and purrsonal moment of Kiki with a black diamond bow earring, which she holds in her left paw:
The piece, from the Atame collection, resembles a ribbon intertwined like knots and represents how couples share their lives, Steckel tells InStyle. “For me, that’s a relationship—you become one.”

Named after luxury fashion brand, Kiki de Montparnasse, the cuddly cat was a recent Christmas gift given to Steckel’s daughter, Victoria. “My husband, Adrian and I got Kiki from a breeder in California—we knew she was the one after seeing how awake and playful she was,” says Steckel. Her family, including two sons, Alexis and Reuben, also has another cat of the same breed, Coco (named after iconic designer Coco Chanel) and a Chihuahua, Chloé (named after French fashion house Chloé).
Kiki is around jewelry all of the time—and just like any other girl, she loves diamonds, says Steckel, whose hand is seen below wearing three white diamond-encrusted wedding bands and playing with the feline.
“Most of the wedding pieces are classic, but they have more of an edge,” Steckel says. The above rings, from the Azúcar collection, were inspired by how love hurts.
In the picture at top, the chic feline pays close attention to the details of a flower-motif bracelet from the Les Fleurs collection. Steckel says, “This piece was made to look like a tattoo when worn on the wrist, and it took six months to create!
Next, I m planning on making a little gold name plate for Kiki s collar, Steckel says. Everyone is so into her and loves her photos on Instagram—she s going to be the pet of my brand.
Stay tuned on what gems Kiki has her eye on next by following @colettejewelry and shop jewels from the brand (starting at $1,500) at colettejewelry.com.

How I Wash My Face: Ashley Greene

Ashley Greene There s no denying it—Ashley Greene has a killer complexion. But there s no easy shortcut to getting her glowing skin. At the Bulgari and Save the Children pre-Oscars party earlier this week, the actress let InStyle in on her skincare routine, which she described simply as quite extensive.

I wash first with Joanna Vargas s vitamin C ($65; dermstore.com)—I m a huge fan. Wash first, exfoliate second. Then, I do an eye cream and use different oils, Greene says. The oils are both still Joanna Vargas. The eye cream I ve been using lately is Kate Somerville. Extensive, yes, but clearly the actress s thorough skincare routine is working.

Designer Jenny Packham s Glamorous #NYFW Collection was Inspired by a Particular 70 s Socialite

Jenny Packham British designer Jenny Packham s shimmery show at New York Fashion Week is making us want to get invited to a chic cocktail party, stat.  From one-shoulder gowns to silk kaftans and jumpsuits, the pieces were bursting with shimmery crystals, feathers and chic metallic glitter – all of which pay homage to the designer’s main source of inspiration – 70’s socialite Bianca Jagger. “It’s eclectic, and slightly more playful,” Packham tells InStyle.com of the show. “We’ve put a lot more textures in—we’ve got satin, we’ve got some quite heavy beading, we’ve got shimmery beading, a little bit of everything.”
Just like Jagger herself, the pieces are elegant, decadent and effortless. “The [Jenny Packham woman] has integrity and wit,” Packham says. “I like the challenge of dressing ladies in lots of different things. With an evening wear collection, each piece has to be quite individual.”

Individual, it was – a juxtaposition of the carefree era of the 70’s with the structure of tailored pieces in bluebird blues, soft caramel and her favorite color, “wild cherry.”
One of our favorite aspect of the collection? The fact that nearly anyone can wear it. “I think it’s been nice in the last year, we’ve been dressing all different ages; we’ve got Helen Mirren who’s 68, then we’ve got Anna Kendrick. I like the challenge of dressing women in all sorts of different things. I think the eveningwear the criteria is that they want to walk into the room and get that ‘wow’ factor.”
While our eyes were glued to the runway during the show, Packham was also making a statement on the other side of the pond, as Kate Middleton was simultaneously stepping out in an off-the-shoulder navy blue tulle dress with a velvet belt by the designer (that the Duchess had worn three months earlier].
Since Packham is clearly no stranger to celebrity dressing, which Hollywood starlet would she love to dress next? “I met Cate Blanchett the other night; I would so love to dress her, so I told her that! She was lovely, she’s quite shy in a way, she’s strong woman but at the same time reserved.”

Olivia Wilde on Her Wedding Plans: I m Just Enjoying Being Engaged

Olivia Wilde Olivia Wilde got engaged to Saturday Night Live funnyman Jason Sudeikis in January, and so far, the wedding plans are still in the very early stages—think: non-existent. I wish I did [have plans], the actress told us at last night s New York launch of Half the Sky Movement: The Game, a Facebook game that helps empower women and girls. Right now, I’m just enjoying being engaged. The dress, the honeymoon, and the ceremony location are all still to be determined, she said—though a New York wedding would be ideal —citing a very good reason for her play-by-play planning delay. I haven’t had time to think about it, she said. We’ve been too busy. But we’re very lucky to be busy, so that’s the other side of it.

4 Unique Colors to Wear With the Vibrant Shade of Poppy

How To Wear: Poppy See All Photos Get to know: Poppy
Color description: A vibrant spring ready hue, this orange-infused red is happy and universally flattering.
Runway inspiration: Monique Lhuillier
Pair the shade with: 1) Fuchsia; the equally peppy shade makes for an unexpected and modern twist, 2) Salmon; the muted color acts as a neutral to tone down your ensemble, 3) Chocolate; the deeper shade offsets the brightness, and 4) Lime; due to its eye-catching nature, this combo is considered a wild-card pairing—wear both together for an unforgettable look.
Avoid: Orange; a clear distinction between shades needs to be created, and poppy will seem less exciting when paired with such a similar color.
Ready to amp up your wardrobe with poppy? Click through our gallery to see outfit pairing ideas for each color combo.

Even Dylan McDermott Gets the Chills Watching His New Show, Stalker

Stalker If you love a good psychological thriller, Stalker will be your newest obsession. The show stars Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q as LAPD detectives investigating nightmarish stalking cases with deadly twists and turns at every corner. (Seriously, brace yourself—we saw an early screening and it took three days to recover.) McDermott tells InStyle how viewers can best prepare for the series premiere tonight, Oct. 1, on CBS.

Although he plays a fearless detective on the show, McDermott gets the chills watching episodes at home. “I have the curtains tightly sealed, a baseball bat in hand, and a loved one to hold my sweaty clenched fist,” he says.
McDermott Tonight’s fiery premiere focuses on a killer who stalks women in Los Angeles and then sets them ablaze. If you’re easily rattled, be sure to call on a binge buddy before tuning in—and remember that there’s safety in numbers. Really, McDermott suggests that the ideal viewing party would consist of “your neighborhood watch or security team.” We d have to agree.
