January Jones Believes Girls Should 'Be Proud' Of 'Funky' Haircuts

January Jones is no stranger to Violet Grey magazine's The Violet Files.
Posing for the second time, the "Mad Men" actress was photographed for the magazine's latest issue wearing six dramatically different looks. Makeup artist Rachel Goodwin and hairstylist Mara Rozak transformed Jones into various personas including an edgy party girl wearing greasy hair, burgundy lips and chunky rings, and an au natural beauty with soft waves and glowing skin.
In the interview, Jones spoke candidly about self-acceptance. She referenced the amazing photo she posted on Instagram for Throwback Thursday, which depicted her 9-year-old self with a mullet.
“I was at my most confident as a kid,” Jones said. "It actually wasn't until I got into high school and started to get quote-unquote pretty that my confidence started to disappear."
Jones added that she wants women and girls who feel weird about their hair to still feel great. "I want to give the message that girls can be proud and self-assured no matter what funky haircut they have," she added.
Take a look at Jones' amazing photos for The Violet Files below, shot by Alex Caley. Check out the interview and comments from the makeup artist at VioletGrey.com.

James Best, 'Dukes Of Hazzard' Star, Dead At Age 88

JAMES BEST DEAD James Best with Flash during Ron Galella Studio Headshot for Special Assignment, United States. (Photo by Betty Galella/WireImage) | Betty Galella via Getty Images RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Prolific character actor James Best, best known for playing the giggling and inept Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on "The Dukes of Hazzard," has died. He was 88.

His wife of 29 years, Dorothy Best, said that Best died Monday night in hospice care in Hickory from complications of pneumonia.

Best starred on the television series that ran from 1979 to 1985. He was the lawman futilely chasing the Duke boys, often in the company of his droopy-faced basset hound Flash. Best employed a battery of catch phrases in the role, as well as memorable laugh that was comically villainous.

"I acted the part as good as I could," Best told The Charlotte Observer in a 2009 interview. "Rosco, let's face it, was a charmer. It was a fun thing."

During a wide-ranging career of several decades, he also acted in movies including "The Caine Mutiny" and "Rolling Thunder," and he appeared on television shows including "Gunsmoke" and "The Andy Griffith Show."

"I was fortunate enough to call him my friend since the day he walked on the set of 'Gunsmoke' back in the early '60s," actor Burt Reynolds said in a statement. "Onset or off, behind the scenes, in front of a class or just as a friend, his name was so fitting because he was truly the 'best' at whatever he did. My heart is heavy, and I miss him deeply."

Best was an acting teacher who helped several future Hollywood stars learn how to appear more natural on camera.

"I learned more about acting in front of a camera from Jimmie Best in an afternoon than from anyone else in a year," said Dukes of Hazzard co-star John Schneider, who played Bo Duke. "When asked to cry on camera, he would say, 'Sure thing . which eye?' I'm forever thankful to have cut my teeth in the company of such a fine man."

Best was born in the western Kentucky community of Powderly, the youngest of eight brothers and a sister. After his mother died when he was a toddler, Best was adopted and raised in Indiana. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and started acting in a military theater company, according to his website.

#DropThePlus And 7 Other Opinions On The Term 'Plus-Size'

Australian model Stefania Ferrario and Australian actress and author Ajay Rochester have been campaigning against the term "plus size" for weeks. The duo believe that the label is both counterproductive and harmful to young girls' self esteem.
According to Ferrario, models like her, who are over a US size 4, are considered "plus size" in the industry. "I do NOT find this empowering," the model wrote on her Instagram account. "I'm NOT proud to be called 'plus,' but I AM proud to be called a 'model,' that is my profession!"
A photo posted by stefania ferrario (@stefania_model) on

Ferrario and Rochester have been outspoken on social media, posting their views to Twitter and Instagram, but they are not the first industry insiders to protest the term. Similarly, models and executives alike have defended the label's existence. Check out seven more folks who have made statements for and against the label, thereby challenging the fashion world's notoriously narrow definition of beauty.
  • 1
Isaac Mizrahi: "I don't like segregation, I like incorporation." Eugene Gologursky / Getty Images During an interview with HuffPost Live, Mizrahi expressed his disinterest in what he called the "segregation" that plus-size shoppers and models experience. "I don't want to speak to a plus-sized woman differently than I speak to a woman," he said, adding, "I don't like segregation, I like incorporation, I like integration. If you're going to do clothes, you need to do them in a whole size range."

Tanesha Awasthi of Girl With Curves: Bloggers should be labeled as bloggers. Steve Jennings / Getty Images In an interview with Who What Wear, Awasthi spoke about the future of plus-size. As a blogger, she mentioned her "frustration" with being labeled as a "plus-size blogger." She said, "One day I hope the blogging community at large will recognize fashion bloggers as bloggers and not lump us into size categories."
  • 3
Hayley Hasselhoff: "Calling it 'plus size' doesn't do it justice." Getty Images Hasselhoff is no stranger to the runway, having walked British Plus-Size Fashion Weekend in February 2014. In response to other international plus-size fashion weekends, Hasselhoff showed her support, noting that it shouldn't be polarizing. "At the end of the day, it just means 'curvy,'" she said of the phrase, and she also adds, "That's why I think the word 'plus-size' in the industry is very different from people's mind view of what 'plus-size' really should mean."
The model acknowledged that the British Plus-Size Fashion Weekend is good in showing a diverse set of models, but noted that all runways should be on-par with the major catwalks shown in New York, London and around the globe. "Calling it 'plus size' doesn't do it justice," she said, adding that "It's about women with curves, and women of all shapes and sizes. I just hope one day (events like this) will get the same respect."

Ivan Bart, IMG Models Senior Vice President and Managing Director: "We want to be an ageless, raceless, weightless agency." Cindy Ord / Getty Images IMG made news when they added models like Ashley Graham and Julie Henderson to its roster. Though these women were traditionally pegged as "plus-size," IMG made the revolutionary choice to keep the models in line with other talents, such as Gisele Bundchen. Bart told Cosmopolitan, "We want to be an ageless, raceless, weightless agency," and added, "We just want to represent the best people in the industry."
  • 5
Ashley Graham: "I am a model, and I happen to be curvy." Michael Stewart / Getty Images As an IMG-represented model, Graham has definitely made waves in the industry. Last year she told The Huffington Post, "At the end of the day, I know who I am. I am a model, and I happen to be curvy. She acknowledged that she considers herself as a model, and nothing else. Later, she went on to say, "If you have to categorize me as curvy or plus-size, that's fine."

Evans, UK retailer: "Why should the category be any different from petite?" John Phillips / Getty Images London Fashion Week always ends in a bang. But, last September, UK-based plus-size brand, Evans debuted their Design Collective for Evans collection on the runway. The head of the retailer's parent company, Arcadia Group, told Women's Wear Daily, "You can't be defensive about it, or apologize about [plus-size fashion]. Why should the category be any different from petite?"
  • 7
Nikki Gloudeman, co-editor of Ravishly.com: "Forget the label altogether." Nikki Gloudeman Gloudeman penned an essay against the use of "plus-size," and made the point that its use connotes people as "directly at odds with what society has fallaciously and damningly peddled as 'desirable.'" After reviewing different synonyms of the phrase, like curvy, she determined that there shouldn't even be a describing term for different shapes. "Forget the label altogether and stop trying to call women anything other than what they are: human beings inhabiting the body they've been given," Gloudeman said.

This Week s Wow: An Exclusive Look at Jason Wu s New Bag, Inspired by Diane Kruger

jason-wu-diane-bag In this weekly feature, InStyle’s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson shares his favorite fashion moment of the week, and explains how it could shape styles to come.
The Moment: It’s not just the clothes that people talk about at Fashion Week, where designers use the spotlight to introduce new makeup trends, accessories looks and, most lucratively, bags. A new one to keep an eye out for today is called the Diane, which will make its debut this afternoon on the runway of Jason Wu.
The Diane in question is none other than fashion favorite Diane Kruger, who announced this summer that she and Wu are teaming up on the design of a new bag. And InStyle has an exclusive preview in advance of the show. Like Kruger’s personal style, it’s understated, chic and looks just as good in neutrals as it does in hot pink.
“Jason asked me what were the most important things to me in a bag,” Kruger says. “I said that I wanted to be able to wear it across the body and that I could open and close it with one hand. I can’t stand having to put my bag down or use both hands to close it while running errands!”
diane-kruger-jason-wu Why It’s a Wow: Though the Diane is far from the first handbag to take its name from a style icon (think of the Birkin and Kelly bags from Hermès or the Lady Dior, a tribute to Princess Diana), it’s unusual to see one trumpeted on the runway. It’s a clever move for Wu, who’s known for keeping his clientele in mind when he designs, and who sold a majority stake of his label to InterLuxe today as he seeks a bigger fashion footprint.
“I’ve always found Diane’s effortless sense of style so inspirational,” he says. “To me, the bag is refined, feminine and timeless, words that I would also use to define Diane.”
Kruger’s choice of words are not so far off: “I was hoping for a timeless and understated bag, one you notice because of its beautiful leather and simplicity.”
Learn More: Check back for images of Jason Wu’s spring 2015 collection later today, and revisit Kruger’s fashion hits in the meantime.

Zooey Deschanel Shows Her Fiery Feminist Side In the August Issue of InStyle

Zoey Deschanel in InStyle s August Issue
Below is an excerpt from the cover story, Good Night, Giggles by Mike Albo, in the August issue of InStyle magazine. It is available on newsstands and for digital download July 11.
Zooey Deschanel could be America s sweetheart if she wanted to be. But a sweetheart has to be sugary and pastel-natured—and the 34-year old actress has an edge to her sweetness. For one thing, she is fiercely independent—god forbid you ask her if she wants kids. Like every woman is dying to give birth! I don t think so. Nobody asks guys that, she says, gaining steam. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, Pregnant and Alone! Stuck in the 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. This brings out the fiery feminist in me, she pronounces.
For more on our cover star: Subscribe to InStyle now
Deschanel is also no shrinking violet when it comes to work. The actress and musician approaches the business of being Zooey with a commitment of a company head. Let s consider her 2014 schedule: In March she finished seven months of shooting New Girl s third season, then traveled across the country to promote To Tommy From Zooey, her capsule collaboration with designer Tommy Hilfiger. Then she went to Canada to film The Driftless Area, a dark comedy co-starring Frank Langella and Anton Yelchin. After that it was off to Moroocco to film Rock the Kasbah, a comedy with Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis. And in a few weeks she returns to L.A. to shoot Season 4 of New Girl. In the middle of this madness, Deschanel found time to record a new album from her indie duo She & Him with songwriter-guitarist M. Ward. Oh, she s also one of the founders of the popular lifestyle site HelloGiggles.com (she launched it with two pals).

If there is anyone to blame for Deschanel s entrepreneurial spirit it would be her parents (a cinematographer and an actress). Growing up in L.A. s Pacific Palisades, she would go from one project to the next “drawing in one corner, writing or sewing in another. I was lucky to have parents who were really, really supportive in terms of creativity. We only went clothes shopping twice a year, but every single day of the week I had something else I was learning to do.”
Zooey Deschanel in InStyle s August Issue
Staying so busy is one of the things that keeps her grounded despite her fame. “I’ve seen a lot of people turn—sometimes it unlocks who they really are. They turn into celebrities who are separate from themselves. That’s OK, but I just don’t want to be like that, she says. I have to be normal. My mother wouldn’t let me be any other way.”

Fun Fact! Kate Winslet Brought Her Own Shoes to Our Cover Shoot

When Oscar winner Kate Winslet arrived to our April cover shoot set in West Sussex, England, we immediately took note of her easygoing nature, fresh-faced beauty, and, yes, her fab shoe collection. The star, who came dressed in a black Cosabella tunic, Alexander Wang T-shirt, and black coated jeans, brought along a few pair of heels from her own closet to pose in, including a pair of Roger Vivier peep toes and our fave, these sleek Giuseppe Zanotti sandals (pictured below).
MORE SHOES: Spring s Sexiest Gladiator Sandals
The ankle-strap style, which are available now at Giuseppe Zanotti boutiques ($815; 212-650-0455), went well with the timeless black-and white looks—by Bottega Veneta, Ralph Lauren Collection, and Michael Kors, among others—that Winslet wore throughout the day. As impressed as we were with her footwear (she even managed to walk outside on a nearby pebble beach in stilettos), it was the actress s other balancing act that was truly memorable. Between shots, she read over the script for her upcoming film, Steve Jobs, and found time to sneak in a quick visit with then-13-month-old son Bear and hubby, Ned Rocknroll. Now that s what we call efficient.
