This Week s Wow: An Exclusive Look at Jason Wu s New Bag, Inspired by Diane Kruger

jason-wu-diane-bag In this weekly feature, InStyle’s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson shares his favorite fashion moment of the week, and explains how it could shape styles to come.
The Moment: It’s not just the clothes that people talk about at Fashion Week, where designers use the spotlight to introduce new makeup trends, accessories looks and, most lucratively, bags. A new one to keep an eye out for today is called the Diane, which will make its debut this afternoon on the runway of Jason Wu.
The Diane in question is none other than fashion favorite Diane Kruger, who announced this summer that she and Wu are teaming up on the design of a new bag. And InStyle has an exclusive preview in advance of the show. Like Kruger’s personal style, it’s understated, chic and looks just as good in neutrals as it does in hot pink.
“Jason asked me what were the most important things to me in a bag,” Kruger says. “I said that I wanted to be able to wear it across the body and that I could open and close it with one hand. I can’t stand having to put my bag down or use both hands to close it while running errands!”
diane-kruger-jason-wu Why It’s a Wow: Though the Diane is far from the first handbag to take its name from a style icon (think of the Birkin and Kelly bags from Hermès or the Lady Dior, a tribute to Princess Diana), it’s unusual to see one trumpeted on the runway. It’s a clever move for Wu, who’s known for keeping his clientele in mind when he designs, and who sold a majority stake of his label to InterLuxe today as he seeks a bigger fashion footprint.
“I’ve always found Diane’s effortless sense of style so inspirational,” he says. “To me, the bag is refined, feminine and timeless, words that I would also use to define Diane.”
Kruger’s choice of words are not so far off: “I was hoping for a timeless and understated bag, one you notice because of its beautiful leather and simplicity.”
Learn More: Check back for images of Jason Wu’s spring 2015 collection later today, and revisit Kruger’s fashion hits in the meantime.

Zooey Deschanel Shows Her Fiery Feminist Side In the August Issue of InStyle

Zoey Deschanel in InStyle s August Issue
Below is an excerpt from the cover story, Good Night, Giggles by Mike Albo, in the August issue of InStyle magazine. It is available on newsstands and for digital download July 11.
Zooey Deschanel could be America s sweetheart if she wanted to be. But a sweetheart has to be sugary and pastel-natured—and the 34-year old actress has an edge to her sweetness. For one thing, she is fiercely independent—god forbid you ask her if she wants kids. Like every woman is dying to give birth! I don t think so. Nobody asks guys that, she says, gaining steam. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, Pregnant and Alone! Stuck in the 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. This brings out the fiery feminist in me, she pronounces.
For more on our cover star: Subscribe to InStyle now
Deschanel is also no shrinking violet when it comes to work. The actress and musician approaches the business of being Zooey with a commitment of a company head. Let s consider her 2014 schedule: In March she finished seven months of shooting New Girl s third season, then traveled across the country to promote To Tommy From Zooey, her capsule collaboration with designer Tommy Hilfiger. Then she went to Canada to film The Driftless Area, a dark comedy co-starring Frank Langella and Anton Yelchin. After that it was off to Moroocco to film Rock the Kasbah, a comedy with Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis. And in a few weeks she returns to L.A. to shoot Season 4 of New Girl. In the middle of this madness, Deschanel found time to record a new album from her indie duo She & Him with songwriter-guitarist M. Ward. Oh, she s also one of the founders of the popular lifestyle site HelloGiggles.com (she launched it with two pals).

If there is anyone to blame for Deschanel s entrepreneurial spirit it would be her parents (a cinematographer and an actress). Growing up in L.A. s Pacific Palisades, she would go from one project to the next “drawing in one corner, writing or sewing in another. I was lucky to have parents who were really, really supportive in terms of creativity. We only went clothes shopping twice a year, but every single day of the week I had something else I was learning to do.”
Zooey Deschanel in InStyle s August Issue
Staying so busy is one of the things that keeps her grounded despite her fame. “I’ve seen a lot of people turn—sometimes it unlocks who they really are. They turn into celebrities who are separate from themselves. That’s OK, but I just don’t want to be like that, she says. I have to be normal. My mother wouldn’t let me be any other way.”

Fun Fact! Kate Winslet Brought Her Own Shoes to Our Cover Shoot

When Oscar winner Kate Winslet arrived to our April cover shoot set in West Sussex, England, we immediately took note of her easygoing nature, fresh-faced beauty, and, yes, her fab shoe collection. The star, who came dressed in a black Cosabella tunic, Alexander Wang T-shirt, and black coated jeans, brought along a few pair of heels from her own closet to pose in, including a pair of Roger Vivier peep toes and our fave, these sleek Giuseppe Zanotti sandals (pictured below).
MORE SHOES: Spring s Sexiest Gladiator Sandals
The ankle-strap style, which are available now at Giuseppe Zanotti boutiques ($815; 212-650-0455), went well with the timeless black-and white looks—by Bottega Veneta, Ralph Lauren Collection, and Michael Kors, among others—that Winslet wore throughout the day. As impressed as we were with her footwear (she even managed to walk outside on a nearby pebble beach in stilettos), it was the actress s other balancing act that was truly memorable. Between shots, she read over the script for her upcoming film, Steve Jobs, and found time to sneak in a quick visit with then-13-month-old son Bear and hubby, Ned Rocknroll. Now that s what we call efficient.

And with New York Fashion Week fall/winter 2015 shows rapidly approaching, we got up close and personal with both designers, and had them answer a quick survey of questions that delve into their new collection (no spoilers, promise) and their personal lives—that takes all of 10 seconds to read.

We drew inspiration from constellations and created versatile pieces that transition easily from day to night, Ashley tells InStyle of the collection, which features scattered gems and a night sky palette that gives an elegant nod to horoscopic traditions. Mary-Kate adds: We focused on minimalist designs that can be mixed, matched, and layered, yet are strong enough to wear on their own.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen AMKxSM StyleMint Collection How should you wear the earrings, hand chains, necklaces, rings, and more that they designed? Take a cue from the fashionable pair. If you have multiple earring holes, wear a pair of the Pyxis drop earrings in the same ear for an asymmetrical look, says Mary-Kate. I love the idea of layering structured pieces with the more delicate ones. Pair the Hydra bangle with the Lynx hand chain, Ashley states.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen AMKxSM StyleMint Collection When it came to the creation of the bags, the Olsen s had a specific vision. We always design with functionality in mind, Ashley says. Each pouch can be carried as a clutch or used to hold everyday items, including makeup and jewelry.
Look for AMKxSM ($29.99 to $39.99) when it launches on Nov. 1 exclusively at StyleMint.com.

What s Right Meow: You ve Never Seen a Feline Jewelry Model as Precious as This

Set your sights on just about the most precious thing ever: Kiki, the kitten seen on Colette Jewelry’s Instagram, modeling alongside some of the brand’s finest new gems. Owned by French-Mexican designer Colette Steckel, the gray British shorthair is a new addition to the family—and already has a thing for diamonds.
Colette Jewelry is known for intricate stone-studded pieces including star-motif ear cuffs, flower pendants, and heart-arrow rings loved by celebs Katy Perry and Rihanna. Most of the pieces are made from Steckel’s workshop in Los Angeles, though she does work in Paris and Mexico City as well. Always mindful of fresh inspirations, Steckel produces collections that are constantly evolving; her upcoming pieces are shown off in Kiki s most recent photos.
RELATED: Meet the Man Behind the Adorable Simon s Cat Videos
Here, we find an up-close and purrsonal moment of Kiki with a black diamond bow earring, which she holds in her left paw:
The piece, from the Atame collection, resembles a ribbon intertwined like knots and represents how couples share their lives, Steckel tells InStyle. “For me, that’s a relationship—you become one.”
RELATED: These Ornate Accessories Are Earth and Feline Friendly
Named after luxury fashion brand, Kiki de Montparnasse, the cuddly cat was a recent Christmas gift given to Steckel’s daughter, Victoria. “My husband, Adrian and I got Kiki from a breeder in California—we knew she was the one after seeing how awake and playful she was,” says Steckel. Her family, including two sons, Alexis and Reuben, also has another cat of the same breed, Coco (named after iconic designer Coco Chanel) and a Chihuahua, Chloé (named after French fashion house Chloé).
Kiki is around jewelry all of the time—and just like any other girl, she loves diamonds, says Steckel, whose hand is seen below wearing three white diamond-encrusted wedding bands and playing with the feline.
“Most of the wedding pieces are classic, but they have more of an edge,” Steckel says. The above rings, from the Azúcar collection, were inspired by how love hurts.
In the picture at top, the chic feline pays close attention to the details of a flower-motif bracelet from the Les Fleurs collection. Steckel says, “This piece was made to look like a tattoo when worn on the wrist, and it took six months to create!
Next, I m planning on making a little gold name plate for Kiki s collar, Steckel says. Everyone is so into her and loves her photos on Instagram—she s going to be the pet of my brand.
Stay tuned on what gems Kiki has her eye on next by following @colettejewelry and shop jewels from the brand (starting at $1,500) at colettejewelry.com.

4 Unique Colors to Wear With the Vibrant Shade of Poppy

How To Wear: Poppy See All Photos Get to know: Poppy
Color description: A vibrant spring ready hue, this orange-infused red is happy and universally flattering.
Runway inspiration: Monique Lhuillier
Pair the shade with: 1) Fuchsia; the equally peppy shade makes for an unexpected and modern twist, 2) Salmon; the muted color acts as a neutral to tone down your ensemble, 3) Chocolate; the deeper shade offsets the brightness, and 4) Lime; due to its eye-catching nature, this combo is considered a wild-card pairing—wear both together for an unforgettable look.
Avoid: Orange; a clear distinction between shades needs to be created, and poppy will seem less exciting when paired with such a similar color.
Ready to amp up your wardrobe with poppy? Click through our gallery to see outfit pairing ideas for each color combo.

At the event, James—sporting some handsome new facial hair—chose a dapper navy blue Dolce & Gabbana three-piece suit that had us swooning. But Woodley s gown is what made our jaws drop: The actress glowed in an ivory Ralph Lauren Collection frock with an open back, which included over 100 hand-made strips of silk cream organza applied over a layer of silk tulle. To top off her winning look, the boho beauty added several delicate feathers to her pinned-back hairdo that were the perfect finishing touch.

Mad Men s 30 Best Looks Ever

See All Photos Mad Men s final season kicks off this Sunday on AMC at 10pm/9c, and while there s a lot to love about the spicy show, one of our favorite love affairs is with the fashion.
Cue: Janie Bryant, the Emmy-award winning costume designer behind the cast of Mad Men s looks. Her skills speak to the time in which the show takes place (the 1960s) impeccably. She captures the essence of a Madison Avenue-housed advertising agency with each and every look from chic housewife styles and looks that embody the mod mood happening in the 60s to powerhouse work wear — each of which is usually decorated with a double-strand of pearls or beautiful brooches. Needless to say, (a Banana Republic line later, after all) Bryant s costuming made a dent. The memorable looks she creates—which are part her own designs, part vintage finds—perfectly epitomize the period while leaving us yearning to recreate the looks ourselves (if you want a little dose of her killer style in your own closet, keep your eyes peeled for her own tights line, Janie Bryant Leg Couture, which launches this August).
So while we re sad to see the show go, we re adding an extra dose of sweet to the start of this bitter sweet departure by taking a look back at the Emmy-award winning show s 30 best looks ever.
